My Review

This is a really early first chapter book, combining lovely illustrations with a story that builds momentum and interest gradually and climaxes in what is really quite a funny ending. A children's classic in America, it's very little known in the UK, but is unusual in the way it bridges that difficult gap between picture books and first chapter books by being comprised of extremely short chapters, repetition within the story in the tradition of many picture books, and super pictures to keep readers engaged. I love it's retro feel and the colour palette - so bright and fun!

This new anniversary edition is worth getting if you can, as it includes the original illustrations in colour form for the first time.
