My Review
'Rosie's Walk' is one of my absolute favourite books for young children! Rosie the hen goes for a walk around the farmyard, and the words of the story simply tell of the itinerary of her journey, and her safe return home for dinner, BUT in the background, children easily spot the wily, but accident prone, fox who is tracing Rosie's steps wanting a dinner of his own. Rosie is oblivious as the fox hides behind fences and buildings, tries to be stealthy, but ends up thwarted in his plans again and again! With plenty to laugh at, and the fun of predicting what will happen to the fox next, it's such a clever book! And, of course, the illustrations, with their retro style and colours, are fabulous! It's an especially brilliant book for reading, too, with children for whom English is not a first language, or with children with hearing impairments, as the pictures tell the story independently of the words.
Heads Up!
If you like this, try 'Goodnight Owl' for more of Pat Hutchins' simple storytelling in board book form, or 'We're Going On A Picnic' for another story where the illustrations form an integral part of the story unfolding.
