My Review
This book is a joy from start to finish! Celebrating the friendship between Trille and Lena, but never shying away from its ups and downs, as well as depicting wonderful inter-generational bonds between Lena and her grandparents, the book perfectly marries its fair share of laugh-out-loud moments with honesty about some of the many things that children find hard and perplexing; loss, understanding those closest to us, and how to cope when we feel hurt or let down by those we love most. Theses are characters kids will love and return to - it's a safe place, this story, and one to cosy up with again and again.
Heads Up!
Maria Parr deals in a super sensitive way with the death of Lena's 'Auntie Granny'. 'Adventures with Waffles' has also been published under the name 'Waffle Hearts', so don't make the mistake of buying both books thinking they are different! However, Maria Parr has written a sequel called 'Lena, the Sea and me', so any fans of 'Adventures with Waffles' can move on to that! She is also the author of 'Astrid the Unstoppable', one of my favourite Middle grade books, but also suitable for 8-10 year olds confidently reading - or as a lovely read-aloud!
