Another brilliant Barrington Stoke publication, absolutely brilliant for reluctant readers! In this novel, Tom Palmer weaves contemporay Lily's story of fell racing and dealing with her Gran's alzheimer's with her Great grandfather's diaries, compellingly detailing trench warfare and his life as a runner, taking messages and dodging fire as he speeds from one outpost to another. It's a book about compassion, grief, friendship and family. Punchy, pacy, and gripping, it's perfectly pitched for 12-13 year olds.

Heads Up!

Lily's Gran is battling with Alzheimers, and the bulk of the book covers a visit to her home, and Lily's experiences of coming to terms with her Gran's condition. It's brilliantly and sensitively written, but Palmer doesn't shy away from the sadness and loss the illness causes.

Tom Palmer has written plenty of books aimed at a similar audience - some set in World War Two as well. Another World War One novel of his well worth a read - especially for football enthusiasts - is 'Over The Line'.
