My Review
Catherine Raynor is remarkable for the beauty of her watercolour illustrations for children's books - some of her double spreads really make you gasp in wonder as you turn the page! 'Augustus and his Smile' is a perfect example of this; mountain vistas and underwater worlds are brought to life in a really ethereal, magical way in Raynor's paintings. Augustus has lost his smile and in looking for it, he travels far and wide, climbing peaks and diving deep, until he realises that his smile is wherever he goes and sees things that bring him joy. It's a stunning story, a joy in itself, as well as a gentle reminder of the difference it makes to lift our eyes and take in the beauty of the world around us.
Heads Up!
Catherine Raynor has written many BEAUTIFUL picture books - my other favourite is 'Arlo; The Lion Who Couldn't Sleep', a gorgeous story of a lovable lion who learns, with the help of his friend the owl, how to relax and find rest at the end of the day - a lovely book for children who struggle to wind down at bedtime.
