My Review
Abstract and full of vibrant pattern and shape illustrations, this book is a great introduction to Australia's landscape and history for young children. The sparse prose echoes the drought described in the story, and by the end of the book children will have experienced, alongside the children in the story, the longing for rain and the relief at its arrival familiar to all who dwell in deserts. A great book for transporting children to a place and experience that are truly 'other'!
Heads Up!
Artwork includes imagery from Aboriginal mythology, so it makes the book a great jumping off point for learning, not only about the aridity of the Australian outback, but the history and beliefs of the people who call it home.
