My Review

My daughter especially loved this Usborne 'Complete Dickens' - with its dark colours and very traditonally styled illustrations it has a feel of the Dickens stories without their weight and hefty language. It's been a big success in our house, and has meant that our kids have been able to easily get a grasp of the storylines of Dickens' main novels, and a sense of the Victorian England, with its dirty streets and crooked villains, of which he wrote. It's still on her bedroom shelf now, and she's nearly 17!

Worth seeking out also if you can find it is the 'Complete Austen' in the same series!

Heads Up!

If you can't get hold of this version affordably, try the more recently published 'Illustrated Stories From Dickens' by Usborne, or the very beautiful 'A World Full Of Dickens Stories' by Angela McAllister - although the latter will perhaps appeal more to grown ups than to children and is one of those books that could look pretty on a shelf but rarely get read!

Publisher Review

This beautifully illustrated collection contains all of Charles Dickens' novels retold for young readers, including Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities and A Christmas Carol. There are notes on the characters and quotations from the original text, plus links to websites to find out more about Charles Dickens' life and times.
