My Review

An eye-opening account of a young boy's journey from a plantation to England - where he believes he will find freedom. In some ways this is an easy read - lots of Catherine Johnson's books are well pitched for the less enthusiastic reader! - but in others, a tough one. Johnson is adept at filling in gaps in the history taught in schools, and here she sheds much needed light on the plight of slaves, not just in the Caribbean, but on the streets of Britain too. Despite being based on true stories, she always manages to leave her characters in a place of hope, and this book is no different.

Heads Up!

Catherine Johnson is a prolific author of children's historical fiction - check out 'Queen Of Freedom: Defending Jamaica' and 'Journey Back to Freedom: The Olaudah Equiano Story' too! Some children might find Johnson's description of a terrifying parrot who belongs to Nathaniel's owner and is trained to bite off the fingers of young slaves as punishment disturbing - understandably so!

Publisher Review

An action-packed story about a boy’s experience of slavery in Britain. Winner of the Little Rebels Children’s Book Award 2019. Nathaniel doesn’t want to move to England with his master’s family, leaving behind his mother and sister on the Jamaican plantation. But then he remembers what his mother told him: once a slave sets foot on English soil, they’re free. Perhaps he can earn his fortune and buy his family’s freedom, too...
