My Review
If 'Little House on The Prairie' was a picturebook it would look like this! Eliza Wheeler has drawn on the life of her mother to tell the story of a family who need somewhere new to live after the death of their father, and move to a shack in the woods. The seasons revolve around them as they turn their house from a shelter into a home. Along the way we learn a lot about the challenges and hard work it took to make a life for pioneer families. the book is crammed with gorgeous watercolour illustrations and Eliza Wheeler has a delightful turn of phrase, simple yet poetic. I also love the hopefulness of this book - the grief felt by the family is palpable at the beginning of the story, but as the year passes, hope for a future is restored as the life they live together is rebuilt. Full of joy and warmth and comfort, it's a picturebook to treasure.
Heads Up!
Eliza Wheeler is also the author of 'Miss Maple's Seed's', a gorgeous story!
