My Review
M.G. Leonard has turned her hand and her imagination to time travel in this first in a new series, 'Time Keys'. There is a lot to establish in the book in order to set up what will probably be a series of several titles, knowing Leonard, so it's quite a conplex read with lots to take on board about how time travel works in this particular imagining! 'Keys' are people who have the gift of unlocking doors into other periods in time through music - an unusual and innovative way of accessing the past! Of course, it's all highly improbable, but then any story about time travel feels that way! What's good about this book? Well, the characters are likeable, and the children in the book adventure alongside their parents, which is unusual in kids' books! The research Leonard puts into all her books really shines here - although the part of the book actually set in Ancient Egypt only accounts for perhaps a quarter of the story, it's totally enlightening and immersive. Children who have learnt the basics of Egyptian culture will experience it in a whole new way as they adventure alongside Sim and his cousin Jeopardy in their mission to stop Nefertitti's golden scarab getting into the hands of the sinister 'Council of the Keys'. Leonard's combined music, history - and martial arts too! - in a book that is simultaneously zanily eclectic and educational!
Heads Up!
The next book in the series is going to be a time heist set in the Viking era, titled 'The Legend Of The Viking Thunder' - I'm pretty confident it'll be making an appearance in the Vikings booklist if this first in the series is anything to go by!
