My Review

Katie Morag is probably better known these days as a BBC heroine than a character in a book, but  the TV adaptation was inspired by these classic stories by Mairi Hedderwick. Katie Morag lives with her family on the Isle of Struay, off the Scottish Mainland, with her two brothers and her parents, who run the island's post office and only shop. She is lovable, scruffy, and always getting into scrapes - she gets grumpy, jealous, confused, and wears all her emotions on her sleeve. These books are old fashioned, wholesome, and full of the joys of being outdoors and free to roam wild. They also really celebrate Katie Morag's relationships with her two, very different Grandmothers, as well as other members of the island community, which I love! Hedderwick's illustrations are lovely, full of gentle colours and fun, and really bring Scottish Island life alive. Great to read aloud, these have also proved to be favourites for newly independent readers in our house.

Heads Up!

There are loads of books in this series - all great! Another favourite is 'Katie Morag and the Dancing Class'. You can buy them all individually, in a box set, or in a treasury.

Publisher Review

Welcome to the Island of Struay, home of one of the best-loved characters in children's books and as seen on TV - Katie Morag McColl! Grannie Island doesn't think much of Granma Mainland's fancy ways, but when a prize sheep gets stuck in Boggy Loch on Show Day, it's up to the ever-resourceful Katie Morag to save the day - with a little help from her two grandmothers...
