A sort of picture book-graphic novel fusion, 'Marcy and The Riddle of the Sphinx' feels like a fantasy-mythology mash up! It's gorgeously illustrated in beautiful colours, and the characters themselves have a slightly Manga feel about their styling. Marcy is afraid of the dark, and scared of the mythical creatures her explorer father tells her of in his tales of daring adventure. Marcy worries she will never be as brave as her parents, but one day, when her father disappears on a quest to Ancient Egypt, she finds the courage to go after him. If she can't rescue him from the clutches of the Sphinx - from the mouth of the black snake itself - then no-one will! Along the way, she encounters some of the other, more benevolent Gods of Egyptian mythology, who help her in her mission - so the book has educational value as well as being a sumptuously illustrated, magical tale of one girl's bid to overcome her fears.
