My Review
This is a gorgeous story, encouraging children to think about how to leave the world a better place. It has so much to say to us and can be interpreted in so many different ways. I love that it introduces the idea of personal responsibility for the world around us, but does it in a way that is gently, achievable, and joyful. With gorgeous illustrations, and perfectly pitched prose, it's a lovely celebration of a life well lived.
Heads Up!
Warning - this book will make you want to plant lupins!
Publisher Review
Barbara Cooney's story of Alice Rumphius, who longed to travel the world, live in a house by the sea, and do something to make the world more beautiful, has a timeless quality that resonates with each new generation. The countless lupines that bloom along the coast of Maine are the legacy of the real Miss Rumphius, the Lupine Lady, who scattered lupine seeds everywhere she went. Miss Rumphius received the American Book Award in the year of publication.
