My Review

My son absolutely loved this book. If you have a wilderness lover, an animal fanatic, or just an introverted child, this story will call to them. Sam leaves home, unprepared for the challenges of living wild. Through the book, he learns and grows, finding ways to survive and forming bonds with the nature and animals around him. It's a simple but compelling story, imparting plenty of scouty skills in its telling, and kindling a yearning for a simpler life.

Heads Up!

It's dated - so you might want to know that Sam steals a falcon chick from a nest and raises it so that it can hunt for him - obviously illegal in our day and age!

There are two sequels to the story, which I haven't yet read - this first book stands alone and is widely considered to be the best.

Publisher Review

Terribly unhappy in his family's crowded New York City apartment, Sam Gribley runs away to the solitude-and danger-of the mountains, where he finds a side of himself he never knew.
