Odd, a young Viking boy, runs away from home despite his dependance on a crutch to walk after an accident involving a axe and a very large tree. In a hunting lodge in the woods, he encounters three animals; a fox, a bear, and an eagle. As he sleeps, he realises they can talk, and are revealed as Loki, Thor and Odin, enchanted and banished to earth by the Frost Giants. Odd determines to help them retake Asgaard and, despite their incredulity, proves that brains and not brawn are what are needed to defeat the giants.

A lovely story, beautifully told, and peppered with stunning black and white illustrations, this is a gentle introduction to Norse mythology that younger readers can enjoy without encountering the violence and destruction present in so many Viking tales!
