My Review

I love Jarvis - his illustrations are so charming and fun and sweet, and his storytelling so sensitive and heartfelt. He really sees the world as a child does. 'Our Pebbles' is a gorgous read to snuggle up with, exploring love and memories and beautiful surroundings, and the simple power of creating together. With stunning colours, a matt and textured super-tactile cover, and lots of detail to discover on each new reading, it's a book to cherish. I love books that celebrate inter-generational relationships and this one is a gem.

Heads Up!

This story of a boy exploring his childhood memories of his Grandad is so sweet - it also deals with the feelings of sadness and loss as his Grandad gets older and has to move into a home and can't go to the beach any more. This will strike a chord with so many children, but it's done so sensitively, normalising the experience with such an emphasis on the celebration of positive memories, that this is a book that could really help children process their emotions in a healthy way.

Publisher Review

With sweets stuffed in their pockets, a boy and his grandad take the trip down to the beach: through the wonky woods, across the railway track – stopping for a chat with the spotty dogs! – over the stile, and there ... peeking out beyond the dunes, the sea and "their" beach. They pick pebbles, wash them clean in the waves and paint their memories from the day, placing them in a special place – a secret place. Jarvis captures the kind of golden childhood memory that you carry with you, as comforting as holding a warm, smooth pebble in your hand. And when life changes, and people change, these pebbles stay with you always.
