My Review

I absolutely love these stories! Celebrating the relationship between a young boy and his Grandad, and the fun that can be had when the fine line between reality and the imaginary world get thoroughly blurred, the books are wonderfully unique and joyful. 'Rain' is my favourite, and begins with a scene many children will feel kinship with - a boy staring out of the window while rain falls outside, unable to go out and have fun. Grandad, however, has other ideas, and soon what starts out as a trip to the end of the road to post a letter ends in a noah's ark style major flood event in which Sam and his Grandad must navigate rapidly rising waters in a boat! Sam always ends up having THE BEST time with Grandad, and the reader is never sure of the point in the stories where their 'normal' day turns into an adventure of the imagination, but that's the wonderful thing about them! Fuelling children's own imaginations, as well as helping grown ups enter into that world of the impossible, Sam Usher creates a very special reading experience - his illustrations are so full of life and beauty and expression, and I love his representation of a relationship that spans the generations. These are really special books - worth investing in in hardback if you can manage it!

Heads Up!

This book is the second in a series of four stories, each one exploring the fun that can be had in extreme weather: 'Snow', 'Storm', and 'Sun' are the other titles. More recently, Sam Usher has begun a new series, still about the same boy and his Grandad, the first title of which is 'Zoom' - well worth checking out!

Publisher Review

Sam wants to go out but it's pouring with rain, so he and Grandpa decide to stay inside until the rain stops. Sam drinks hot chocolate and reads his books and dreams of adventures while Grandpa gets on with his important paperwork. Grandpa seems to have a VERY important letter to write. Then that very important letter has to be posted, despite the rain and floods. As they finally go outside, Sam and Grandpa have a magical adventure.
