My Review

I have long loved ‘The Bed Book’, Sylvia Plath’s whimsical and warm poem written for her own children. In the book, a poem, she muses on all the different kinds of beds we could have – a bed that might be a submarine, or jet-propelled, or pocket-sized, or is on the back of an elephant, or all sorts of other wonderful and weird ideas! When I first discovered it with our kids, it led to brilliantly creative shared dreaming about what our own bed inventions would be – it’s a great resource as a jumping off point for poetry writing with children as they can really let their imaginations run wild!

In this new illustrated edition, Cindy Wume has paired Sylvia Plath’s zany words with bright and fun illustrations, making this a fresh feeling and engaging picturebook for 3-5s. Perfect for sharing at bed time!

Heads Up!

This new version is super fun, but if you can find a second hand version of the edition with Emily Arnold McCully's illustrations, this has to be my favourite! Hard to come by, but worth every penny!

Publisher Review

From Pulitzer Prize-winning Sylvia Plath, this is the perfect bedtime read, written for her own children, exquisitely illustrated by Cindy Wume in picture book form for the first time. A Tank Bed's got cranks And wheels and cogs And levers to pull If you're stuck in bogs. Or a Jet-Propelled Bed For visiting Mars With mosquito nets For the shooting stars. Beds come in all shapes and sizes, and need not be boring beds at all . . . There are submarine beds, for nosing through water like a sardine, beds for fishing, and jet-propelled beds that take you all the way to the stars. The perfect bedtime read, playful and comforting, the poem demonstrates Plath's eye for imagery and arresting language and is exquisitely illustrated in full colour throughout.
