My Review

I know, I know, another Pat Hutchins! But this is a retro classic and so perfect for introducing the concept of division with young children in a way they will definitely understand and relate to as it deals with the perennial dilemma of how to share out food between a growing number of people! As more and more friends ring on the doorbell and arrive in their kitchen, the children in the story have to share out the cookies on the plate they have been given. What begins as a huge pile to be shared between two becomes the problem of what to do when there are twelve people around the table and the doorbell rings AGAIN! Great for talking about sharing, too, and with plenty of repetition making it a perfect read aloud inviting audience participation, it would also be a great book to inspire a lesson where the story gets acted out in real life - because who wouldn't enjoy a Maths lesson taught with cookies!?

Heads Up!

No longer in print, but easily available second hand.
