My Review

This is a cracking coming-of-age story for young teen readers. Set in Callenlas, a fantasy land where stars in human form rule and share their gifts with their people, it is reminiscent of Narnia - but without the talking animals, and with dragons! Cairn is a hugely likeable hero who struggles with self consciousness, mixed motivation, and working out how he feels about his feisty friend Arunae. He is also desperate to put his farm-learned horsemanship to the test and be the first in Callenlas to train a dragon. He wants the glory and honour of being a rider for the King, but he learns through his training that selflessness and being prepared to serve are what truly matter to King Elior, and will bring Cairn himself the greatest satisfaction. Subtle lessons for us all are couched in brilliant storytelling and great writing. There's the tiniest bit of romance, and lots about friendship, integrity, and bravery. I really loved it, and have put it on the top of my teenage son's reading pile - but I'm pretty sure my girls will love it too!

Heads Up!

Written by Christian author H R Hess, the books point to biblical truth in the same way as C. S. Lewis's Narnia books do - there is allegory but the story holds its own and is compelling in and of itself in this book. The first novel in the series, 'The Dark Star', is more overtly allegorical and I actually feel this second book, which can be read as a stand alone novel, is a better book, but I would recommend both for their compelling characters, imaginative fantasy worlds, and great character development. The third book, 'The Lost Prince' is also absolutely excellent!

Publisher Review

“What if everyone’s wrong about dragons?” Cairn barely dared to voice the thought. “What if dragons can be...trained?" Farm-boy Cairn can hardly believe it when he is chosen to train as a rider for Star-King Elior. Far from home in the mountains, where dragons lurk and war threatens, Cairn strives to become a great rider of Callenlas. Does he have what it takes after all? And what is his friend Arunae hiding? This is the second novel in an exciting, popular series, a gripping fantasy/adventure tale reminiscent of C.S. Lewis' fiction.
