My Review
These were my favourite Enid Blytons growing up - along with Malory Towers, of course! They are a fabulous first introduction to adrenaline - fuelled classic Blyton adventure. I loved the characters, and Kiki just adds a bit of extra fun! I really like the added dimension in this series of some good adults! Blyton has a reputation for starting every story with mean grown-ups from whom children need to escape to find adventure. However, in this story, the Mannerings' mother is single, working hard to support them. She has to send them away to their grumpy aunt and uncle for the summer at Craggytops on the rugged Cornish coast - and it's here, in the course of their action packed, adventure filled Summer, that they meet the kindly Bill Smugs. You'll have to read the books to find out what happens, but it's a happy family story!
Heads Up!
This is the first in Enid Blyton's 'Adventure' series - in which there are 8 books. You can buy all 8 in various box set versions well worth doing for kids who are Blyton fans!
Blyton has come under the spotlight in recent years for her of-the-time racist stereotypes - particular her villifying of black people. This is one of the books in which this is an issue, and you might want to know this in advance. Her attitudes were of her time and I think most children now would recognise them as such - you can always give them a heads up in advance.
