My Review
Pantomime-esque 'it's behind you' moments abound in this joyful picture book debut by Chloe Savage. It's truly an example of a book that spans all ages in its appeal (even my teens enjoyed having a read of this one!). There are playful illustrations of the characterful jellyfish to spot hiding from the explorers on so many of the pages, as well as plentiful detail portraying all the life and activity contained in a research ship in the wilds of the Arctic. From Narwhals, to a polar bear, to the northern Iights, the illustrations in the book allow children a glimpse of the far north they may never see in reality. I especially love the map that covers the opening page of the book, showing the North Pole in the middle, and the proximity of Russia to the northernmost tip of America, so eye opening for children (and adult readers!) used to seeing the UK in the middle of our world maps. This is a book that plays with the idea of scientific discovery and leaves you wondering what else there might be for scientists to discover, hiding just out of sight - a great question for children, our scientists of the future to be left with....and a wonderful invitation to wonder at the world!
Heads Up!
Also in this series is the more recently published 'The Search For Carmella'.
