My Review

I really like Judith Eagle's writing - she's clearly a fan of the children's classics, and references to them turn up throughout her books, which feels fun! Her stories have echoes of Blyton in that her heroes are invariably orphaned or abandoned and left to find their own way in the world - but her  writing feels more up to date and her characters, in the end, find acceptance and a home. She is also obviously a ballet fan - and this theme rears its head in both 'The Secret Starling' and, more subtly, 'The Accidental Stowaway'. Her books are quite a find for children who want to read about  feisty female, bookish characters and like a happy ending!

Heads Up!

My only grip with Judith Eagle books I have read so far is that she seems to have a slightly free and easy attitude to shoplifting - it happens in both books I have read with no apparent consequences for the perpetrators, which I find a little strange in a children's book!

Publisher Review

The acclaimed debut novel from the author of The Pear Affair and The Accidental Stowaway! Abandoned children running wild on the moors, evil child catchers, cunning cats and mysterious ballet shoes abound in this incredible first novel. Clara has lived a life of solitude, home schooled under her mean uncle's strict regime . . . until now! The day that Uncle abandons Clara, leaving her with nothing but a wedge of 'guilt money' and a half empty, crumbling manor house, she is determined to do things her way for a change. And when streetwise Peter turns up, with his rescue cat and a surprising array of knowledge, she is sure that between them they have everything they need to survive. But the house is to be sold . . . and Uncle has lied to Clara . . . and nothing, NOTHING is as it seems.
