My Review
This was a book recommended by my dad as one of his childhood favourites - it doesn't disappoint. It's seldom that the experiences of children in Eastern Europe under Nazi occupation find their way into children's fiction - this is a sterling exception, and well worth a read. The kindness, courage, and loyalty of the four children, Ruth, Edek, Bronia, and their new friend Jan, and the generosity of the strangers they encounter on their search for their disappeared parents, make this a deserving mid-century classic.
Heads Up!
Ian Serraillier was also known for his retellings of Greek and Roman myths, as well as Beowolf!
Publisher Review
An unforgettable story of life during and after the Second World War, based on true accounts. For readers of The Book Thief, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and The Diary of Anne Frank.
This is a story of many different things.
Of a terrible war and an occupied land
Of the Balicki children who are determined to survive
Of a dangerous journey from war-torn Poland to Switzerland
Of a paper knife that gives them the courage to carry on when nearly all hope is lost.
'I urge you to read this book as it will stay in your memory forever' Guardian
'A true modern classic' Booktrust
