My Review

Pippa Goodheart has done such an excellent job with this book - it totally transports the reader to the workhouse alongside Polly, to experience its hardships and loneliness, before whisking them to the bustle and clatter or Quarry Bank Mill (now a National Trust property) to will Polly on both in her work and her bid to escape. Weaving in threads of friendship and family, as well as the complex issue of slavery and the pressures and dangers posed to those working on factory floors during the industrial revolution, this a book that is simple to read but really packs a punch.

Heads Up!

If you live or teach near Manchester, this is a great book to share with children studying the Industrial Revolution - combine it with a trip to Quarry Bank Mill, which will be brought to life through Polly's story!

You might want a heads up that Polly loses her good friend Min, who has an accident when working in the factory, is taken to hospital, but never returns. The story does end happily for Polly, but of course she is one of the many children featured in the book and the stories of the others are unlikely to end so well.

Publisher Review

It s 1838. Polly is sent from a London workhouse to Quarry Bank Cotton Mill. The family who own Quarry Bank care for their apprentice children better than most mills do. But Polly is owned by the mill just as the slaves in America who grow the raw cotton sent to the mill are owned. Can Polly and her friend Min escape? What surprises will Polly discover about her own family? A life or death adventure in which Polly Freeman learns who she is and what she wants.
